  • Overview

    Assists Chief Engineer in directing and overseeing the activities of the Engineering Department, mechanical operations, repair and maintenance functions for the vessel by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors or staff:


    1. Directs and oversees the functionality and safety of the vessel’s engines, boilers, deck machinery, electrical, hydraulic, refrigeration and sanitary systems in accordance with policy, local, state and federal laws and regulations.
    2. Resolves problems using solutions that involve appropriate techniques, technologies, or concepts.
    3. Directs and oversees required documentation for energy management, conservation and preventative maintenance programs.
    4. Provides direction and acts as example for interpretation and application of company policies and procedures to the engineering activities.
    5. Analyzes and maintains a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operations, and develops recommendations accordingly.
    6. Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.


    Experience in successful supervision of Unlicensed Personnel maintain the plant machinery:

    1. R22 Screw Compressor Refrigeration plant including, RSW Chillers, Plate Freezers, liquid pumps, screw compressors, etc
    2. Caterpillar Diesel Generators with Tier 4 SCR exhaust treatment, service, monitoring and Electrical Plan
    3. Pumps, Heat Exchangers, Hydraulics, Cranes, MSD Sewage Systems, Hotel services for 100+ person permanently moored processing vessel
    4. Basic Cutting, Welding, Machine Tool Operations,
    5. Forklift repairs
    6. Pneumatic Compressors and Air Systems


    Extensive seafood or related industry experience preferred.  Four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     3 years as an Assistant Engineer on a similar sized vessel.

    1. Advanced fire fighting skills.
    2. Clean vessel safety record.
    3. Clear criminal background check.
    4. Familiarity of all state and federal requirements/regulations for the fishery being applied for.
    5. Familiarity with pollution abatement procedures.
    6. Basic HR awareness and training.
    7. Familiarity with production needs and willingness to work with vessel manager to support production.


    Working Conditions

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
