  • Overview

    The main objective for the Tender Technician Program is to collect fish quality data throughout the harvest and tendering process. The main duty of the technician is to collect data. The data collected includes basic harvest information, fish age and temperature, chilling methods, fishing gear descriptions. Another important component to the duties include outreach to the fishers on some fishing practices and species handling. The goal is to help fishers provide a higher quality catch.

    Responsibilities

    • Work aboard commercial fishing vessels, tenders and/or on seafood processing docks.
    • Observe ocean-fishing activities
    • Ability to read, collect, monitor and report fish quality and temperature data.
    • Sort fish species, weigh and document findings
    • Enter collected data into a database using a computer
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of fishermen, tender men, government resource managers, plant/vessel manager and plant supervisors.
    • Previous commercial fishing experience in any of the following areas is preferred:

                              Work aboard a commercial fishing vessel or tender

                              Work on a seafood processing dock

                              Observing ocean-fishing activities

                              Entering collected data into a database using computers.

    Working Conditions

    • Room, board and transportation to work location are provided
    • Must be comfortable living on a tender vessel
